One of the coolest things we do in 3rd grade at Hawthorne is go on a biking field trip. With everything that we have missed out on thanks to Covid, this is the one thing that really upset me. I decided I was going to make Bike Day happen for my students and Monroe in the summer. I taught three Hastings history lessons through Zoom in June. Then, on July 7th, we had a modified bike day to go see the things we'd learned about. Half of my students and their parents were able to come, which I thought was a good turn out. We all met at the Hastings Museum.

Then we walked around the original cemetery.
After that we got on our bikes and biked to the current cemetery.
This is my favorite part. We learn about famous Hastings citizens during the lessons. Then, at the cemetery they see names they recognize. Working together they can recall all the details of the stories.

Our favorite ice cream shoppe, Special Scoops, opened their doors an hour early for us so that we could end with ice cream.

It was such a wonderful day! I'm so glad we got to do bike day, even if it looked a lot different this year.
