We decided to take our kids on a ski trip. It is an experience we've been wanting to give them, and it was a vacation we felt we could do safely during Covid. We looked at a few places that were recommended to us (Snowy Range in Wyoming, Grandby in Colorado, and Terry Peak in South Dakota). We decided on Terry Peak in Lead, SD.
Leading up to the trip, the forecast was not ideal. The two days we were going to be skiing had a high of -5 degrees. We knew of other people cancelling their plans for ski trips the same weekend. We decided to go through with it. We bought and borrowed some warmer ski gear and hoped for the best.
Monroe and I studied Chimney Rock this year in 4th grade social studies. When I found out that one route to Lead led us right by Chimney Rock, I convinced Zach to take that route. The roads there and visibility were not great. When we finally got to Chimney Rock, this is all we could see:

We rented a house on VRBO. It was a cozy little house that we loved staying in.
On the first day we signed the kids up for ski lessons and Zach up for a snowboarding lesson.
Ready to go!
The boys did well in their lesson and had fun with us that afternoon.
This was taken from the lift. Zach is between the two boys. Monroe went up to the greens with me. Her instructor didn't get to turns in her lesson, so it was up to me to teach her. She did great learning turns and navigating the much steeper greens.
Day 1 was a success!
The sun was shining all day and no one ever complained of being cold.
We saw deer quite a few times in town. It was surprising each time.
Morning number two started out a little rough. The boys seemed to forget what they had learned the day before. They got frustrated with us, and we got frustrated with them. Luckily, we had planned to do another lesson that afternoon.
Lunch break
Zach, Monroe, and I had a great time on the greens while the boys were in their second lesson.
(Zach skied on day 2 so that he could help more with the kids.)

Before heading home we decided to take the boys up on the lift. They had been asking to ride up, but they weren't ready to go down on their own.

Zach and I each went down with a boy between our legs. It went really well, and the boys loved it!
On the morning we left, we headed to Mount Rushmore. It was about 30 minutes from Lead. All three kids were not feeling well because of all the twists and turns.
The way home felt so much longer than the way there. The kids did great, but Zach and I were over it. About two hours from home, we got a call that school the next day was closed for dangerously low temperatures. It was welcome news because it meant we could unpack slowly.
We would highly recommend Terry Peak for learning to ski. We had a great experience and look forward to going again.
