Bike Day Field Trip

On May 10th, my class took the neatest field trip I've ever been on.  We had been learning about Hastings History for a few weeks.  That morning we left the school on bikes to go see all of the things we had been learning about.  Leading up to the field trip, my partner teachers and I were quite nervous about the biking part.  We contemplated not biking, since the other schools don't.  In the end, we decided to go for it because we knew that our students had looked forward to "Bike Day" in third grade.
We left the school and biked to the museum first.  At the museum, we went to the Kool-aid exhibit and explored the first cemetery and Fisher Fountain.

From the museum, we biked to the current cemetery.  This was my favorite part.  We stood across the front, and the students yelled out names on gravestones that they recognized.  Then they shared all of the details they remembered about that person's life story.  The parents and I were really impressed with all the details the students recalled.

We had a police officer and a sheriff with us all day, stopping traffic.  The kids thought it was so cool!

Then we went to Hastings College to tour the new art building.  We were given a glass blowing demonstration.
Our glass blower was a past Hawthorne Panther.

After Hastings College, we biked to the park to eat and play.

Then, we biked to the library.

After the library, we walked around downtown to certain historic buildings.

Finally, we biked back to school.  It was such a fun day!  Seeing the gravestones and historic sites brought all of our previous learning to life and made it more meaningful.  This was, by far, the best field trip I've ever been on! I am so glad we took the kids on a biking adventure!
